Formerly known as Cassaro, Corso Vittorio Emanuele is the oldest street in the city of Palermo. It was the Phoenicians who laid out the road that divided the city in two, connecting the ancient port to the necropolis behind Palermo.
With the Arabs, Corso Vittorio Emanuele became the main street from which the traditional alleys typical of Arab town planning spread out. The ancient name by which Corso Vittorio Emanuele is known is of Arab origin. The term Cassaro in fact means the fortified one, such was the appearance of this area during the Arab domination.
Substantial changes to the road occurred in the second half of the 16th century, a period when Palermo was the capital of the Spanish viceroyalty. The street was extended until it was decided to open it to the sea with the construction of Porta Felice.

Corso Vittorio Emanuele is still one of the city's main streets. It is lined with many places of interest. Among the most important are the Cathedral, Palazzo dei Normanni, Porta Nuova, Porta Felice, churches and ancient buildings of great artistic and historical value.
