The history of Campo de Santa Clara dates back to 1147 when the Moors conquered the city. In 1288, under the rule of D. Dinis, Campo welcomed, in the eastern part, the Monastery of Santa Clara from which it received its name. In the mid-16th century, D. Maria chose the site to construct her Palace and the Parish Church of Santa Engrácia, which gave way to the current National Pantheon in the second.
In the 19th century, the Feira da Ladra was definitively transferred to Campo de Santa Clara with the construction of the Market, the last example of the golden age of Iron Architecture in Lisbon.
