The apartments are registered with and certificated by the local Calheta Municipality for local accommodation use (AL–Alojamento Location) About the town: The name Arco da Calheta comes from two elements. Firstly, arco (meaning arch) is a description of the semi-circular shape the hills form; Secondly, da Calheta refers to the close proximity to the neighbouring civil parish of Calheta. This parish was one of the very first to be settled and subsequently farmed and is one of the wealthiest in artistic and patrimonial treasures. It was here that João Fernandes Andrade, known as João Fernandes do Arco settled at the end of the 15th century. He owned vast lands of wheat, sugar mills and slaves, and set up a home with a private chapel and chaplain. Arco da Calheta is mainly irrigated by a branch of the important Levada do Rabaçal and another known as Madre Grande, which has its origins in Paul da Serra. This parish’s confining limits are the civil parishes of Madalena do Mar, Canhas and Calheta. Local Tourist Attractions: Dolphin and whale watching and deep-sea fishing excursions available from Calheta marina (3 kilometres). Rabaçal (10 kilometres) is the start point for several of the most popular levada and mountain walks on the island. There are over 1400 kilometres of levada walks in Madeira with many more paths and tracks to explore taking you from 6000ft plus to sea level. Calheta and the environs: Casa das Mudas Art Centre (2 kilometres) is the third-largest cultural venue in Portugal featuring works by Dali and Sir Francis Bacon and where regular theatre, dances and artistic performances are held. It is worth visiting not only for these but also for the architecture and for the fabulous views. Calheta has one of the only two working sugar mills on Madeira, tours are available where you can sample the mill’s aguardente (a grape brandy distilled from Vinho Verde grapes and aged in old port wine casks) and molasses. There are close to the houset at walking distance services like shops, restaurants, bars and minimarket. Also in Calheta Beach with his big ”Pingo Doce” Supermarket.
