Property description
Sintra has prehistoric remains, Roman occupation and was fortified by the Moors with the Moorish Castle in the eighth century.
Reconquered in 1147 by King Afonso Henriques, it became a summer refuge for monarchs in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, especially the National Palace of Sintra.
In the nineteenth century, King Fernando II transformed the Convent of Pena into the Palace of Pena in a romantic style, and in 1995 the Cultural Landscape of Sintra was recognized by UNESCO.

Full of palaces and emblazoned houses and chalets, Sintra is a pearl that transports us to the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century, where Romanticism has its most prolific home.

It is in this magnificent city that we present this chalet, built in 1951, designed by the architect Manuel Joaquim Norte Júnior, one of the greatest names of reference in Portuguese architecture of the twentieth century, being considered one of his most emblematic works in an eclectic-romantic style.

He graduated in Civil Architecture at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts, did an internship in Paris in 1903 and marked his presence in Avenidas Novas with the Malhoa House-Atelier, on Avenida 5 de Outubro, in Lisbon.
Holder of an eclectic aesthetic with historicist and Art Nouveau influences, he designed dozens of buildings and was distinguished with multiple Valmor Awards, adding six distinctions between 1905 and 1915 (1905, 1908, 1912×2, 1914 and 1915), more than any other architect in the history of the prize, leaving almost seventy works in Sintra until the end of his career.

Located in the Estefânea neighborhood, next to the Olga Cadaval Cultural Center in Sintra, in a line of houses that reflect the same architectural quality, this historic villa is called Casa da Torre. It has an unobstructed view of fields and nature.

The façade reproduces a medieval castle, with ogival arch doors, simulated merlons and a central coat of arms on the tympanum, giving it the character of a manor residence and reinforcing the fairytale atmosphere typical of romantic Sintra. At the top, stone gargoyles welcome us with grandeur, immediately transporting us to a fantasy imaginary.

Inside, spread over three floors, the villa includes six bedrooms, two living roomsone with a fireplacetwo kitchens (one in open space), a hall adorned with stained glass from 1926 by R. Leone and wooden ceilings. The exotic garden where you can find several fruit trees, with swimming pool and barbecue completes this example of Portuguese architectural refinement.
Ricardo Leone was a virtuoso disciple of Cláudio Azambuja and, in 1920, took over the direction of the Stained Glass and Art Mosaics Workshop founded by the master, which began to bear his name. In the 1930s and 1940s, his studio stood out for its technical excellence and dynamism in the production of stained glass in Portugal, having among many others restored the triptych of the Passion in the Chapter Room of the Monastery of Batalha and the sixteenth-century stained glass windows of the Main Chapel.

The bedroom area is located on the first floor, where 4 bedrooms amaze us with their details in eighteenth-century tiles, woods and unobstructed views. On this floor we also have access to the attic, through a trapdoor.

In the basement we find another apartment that would once be the service staff area, with two bedrooms, a kitchen, a small living room and a bathroom, and with a direct access door to the outside.

Around the house there is a generous garden area, in need of recovery, but with a lot of potential to become a very pleasant area. We also have the pool area, with its support annexes, barbecue and toilet.

In the garden we also find two fountains and an arbor with a stone table where you can enjoy a romantic breakfast, or tea in the late afternoon, for example.

The house has a large garage with space for two cars, in addition to the several parking lots on the street.
