An Algarve city, county seat and district capital, it is located in the Algarve. It is located on the south coast of mainland Portugal, being separated from the Atlantic Ocean by several estuaries of the so-called Ria de Faro and by sandy islands. The district stretches from west to east and has a vast southern coastline, which it facs, and a scant western coastline. It has the particularity of encompassing the entire region of the Algarve, which is subdivided into three sub-regions: mountain, barrocal and coast, in this order from the interior to the coast. The mountain reaches an altitude of 902 meters in Foia, constituting a natural border between the Baixo Alentejo and the Algarve. The Barrocal is a narrow strip dominated by heaths and the coastline is steeper to the west than to the east, over a length of more than 200 kilometres.
The climate is temperate, with a Mediterranean character. Its mild temperatures, with mild winters and hot, dry and long summers, together with the vast coastline, are strong attractions for tourism.
