A white and noble city, Estremoz can be divided into two nuclei that mark its evolution: the medieval houses next to the castle and, outside the walls, the modern town.
Estremoz has a rich cultural heritage, including the castle with its medieval walls and the old citadel (13th century) where the Pousada Rainha Santa Isabel is currently located, which is part of the Pousadas de Portugal network.
Estremoz became known above all for the extraction and exploitation of high quality white marble. In fact, the region contributes 90% to the fact that Portugal is the second largest marble exporter in the world.
Equally famous are the region's red clay, which gave rise to the traditional dolls that are so easy to find in the city's craft stores.
