A zona onde a Vila de Carvoeiro se situa tem uma longa história de ataques militares e de piratas, tendo presenciado uma série de combates navais, de entre os quais se destaca o que deu origem à batalha de 1544 entre uma esquadra de navios comandados por Dom Pedro da Cunha e o corsário turco chamado Xarramet. Durante a maior parte da sua história, a pesca foi o pilar da economia local, no entanto, hoje em dia o principal sector económico desta pitoresca vila é o turismo.
