Another huge draw for the region is the fact that is surrounded by a vast array of walking, cycling, water sports and fishing areas. Golf fans will also be happy with the fact that there are many excellent courses nearby such as Royal Obidos Spa & Golf Resort (25 miles away) and West Cliffs Golf Course (26 miles away). Football fans will be keen to note that the property is just 22 miles from the home stadium of professional club UD Leiria, and the proximity to Lisbon and Porto means the property is also just a few hours from the home stadium of FC Porto, Benfica and Sporting Lisbon, three of the biggest clubs in world football.

SURFERS PARADiSE

Many customers come to the hotel, attracted by the fascination of seeing live, the big waves and meeting those who can surf these giant water masses in nearby Nazare, which do not exist anywhere else in the world.

Some of the world's most famous big wave surfers know the hotel and are considered friends. Big brands associated to this phenomenon have also used the hotel for events and accommodation of their brand ambassadors or their executive clients. There are also magnificent places close by for surfing and schools for those interested in beginning this activity.

ABOUT THE AREA

Only 100km north of Lisbon, the little town of Alcobaca has a charming if touristed centre with a little river and bijou bridges. All, however, yields centre stage to the magnificent 12th-century Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Alcobaca, one of Portugal's memorable Unesco World Heritage Sites.

The Leiria district is an agreeable mixture of medieval and modern, a lively university town built at the foot of a promontory fortified since Moorish times. The town's dramatically sited castle is a commanding presence above the narrow streets and red-tiled roofs of the historic centre, built along the lazy curves of the Rio Lis.

Dom Afonso iii convened a cortes (Portugal's early parliament) here in 1254; Dom Dinis established his main residence in the castle in the 14th century; and in 1411 the town's sizeable Jewish community built Portugal's first paper mill. Modern-day Leiria has a pleasant, low-key urban buzz and makes a convenient base for visiting nearby sights, including Alcobaca, Batalha, Fatima and the Pinhal de Leiria - all easily accessible by bus.
